Equality at work and in society is a core trade union issue.

Maternity leave and pay, protection from discrimination, equal pay and much more has been brought about because of the work of trade unions fighting for equality for all workers, regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, religious or political belief, marital status or carer status.

In Northern Ireland, ICTU works on a wide range of equality issues.

Women’s Equality

In Northern Ireland, ICTU works on a range of equality issues which, whilst societal issues, particularly affect women in work and society. This includes the importance of proper childcare and social care provision, work-life balance and family leave frameworks as well as decent work and protection against all forms of gender based violence at work and in society.

The Women’s Committee of NIC-ICTU is elected every two years following the NIC ICTU Biennial Conference and works jointly alongside the Women’s Committee in the Republic of Ireland.  Together, the Women’s Committee oversees a motion based Biennial Conference and Seminar on alternate years.
