It is particularly important for black and minority ethnic migrant workers to join and organise in trade unions to avoid exploitation and poorer treatment than other workers.

ICTU Migrant Workers Support Unit (MWSU) was established in 2007.

Its fundamental aim is to pursue the implementation of Congress policies by working towards the elimination of racism, discrimination, exploitation and barriers in accessing services for migrant workers.

The ICTU most recently was a partner in the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, Crossing Borders Breaking Boundaries project. The project supported the labour market integration of BAME workers in the agricultural, food processing and services sectors in Donegal/Derry, Cavan/Armagh and Monaghan/Newry - Down, securing their rights and conducting research.

From this project and research a Migrant Rights Charter was created.

ICTU continues this invaluable work of assisting BAME workers, and participates and assists our affiliate unions with their own work in this area.
