Motion no: 18
This BDC commends the work of Youth Connect and the ONE Cork Project in educating and encouraging non-union members to join trade unions and become active in building our movement. Conference agrees that it is critical to the growth and success of our movement that we bring greater numbers of young people into active membership and that this is best achieved by developing an active campaigning movement committed to ending inequality and unfairness in the workplace and in society in general. Conference recognises the efforts being made by several af liate unions to build membership recruitment through special organising programmes and units but notes that many other unions do not have the resources to replicate that work. Conference further recognises that af liate unions, through their membership pro le and work environment, may be in a position to reach out to young non-union members promoting membership and a positive image for the movement. BDC therefore instructs the incoming Executive Council to seek to develop cross union organising programmes to help resource membership recruitment and build a strong campaigning pro le for the ICTU and its af liates which encourages young people to want to join and play their part in building a better fairer society through active union membership.
