It is particularly important for black and minority ethnic migrant workers to join and organise in trade unions to avoid exploitation and poorer treatment than other workers.

The ICTU runs a number of regular conferences. The all island BDC takes place once every two years and the Northern Ireland Conference happens on the alternate year.  

Trade Unions have a long and proud history of worker education. Trade Unions have been involved in the struggle to provide 'second chance' educational opportunities for people for many generations.

In Northern Ireland, ICTU works on a wide range of equality issues. This includes gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, religious or political belief, marital status or carer status.

The health, safety and wellbeing of workers is a core trade union issue. Employers have a duty of care to employees and this is protected through a range of important pieces of legislation.

The Union Learning Fund (ULF) for Northern Ireland was established in 2002 to promote activity by trade unions to support the government's objective of creating a learning society.
