Motion no: 15

Conference is alarmed at the continuing growth of far right parties across Europe and beyond. The success of far right parties in the recent Swedish and Italian elections should be a wakeup call for us. We must remember the lessons from the previous century when fascist governments unleashed persecution, murder, genocide, and war.

In this century, the far right have learned to wear suits rather than uniforms and moderated their attacks to get votes. But the underlying message of prejudice and hate is the same. They have become organised, international, and effective in getting their narratives accepted into mainstream politics.

Conference must remember the phrase that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.

Therefore, conference calls on the NIC to engage with organisations working on tackling prejudice, racism, and the growth of the far right to:

  • Develop strategies to counter the growth of the far right and their narratives.
  • Develop a training programme for reps and activists to prepare them to counter the influence of the far right and to protect those in our society who are targeted by prejudice.
