Motion no: 18
At present it is not illegal in Northern Ireland to discriminate against older people in the provision of goods, facilities and services, whereas such discrimination is illegal in England, Scotland and Wales. The Northern Ireland Assembly have been unable to agree on the scope of such legislation.
Given ICTU’s commitment to equalise legislation in this area, we seek conference to approve:
NIC ICTU writing to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to advise of the lack of progress regarding the alignment of older people’s rights with the rest of the United Kingdom and given the precedent set by Westminster regarding legislation on same-sex marriage and abortion to request that legislation now be enacted.
NIC ICTU highlighting the issue amongst MLA’s as a means to equalise the position on this legislation in Northern Ireland with the rest of the UK
