Conference notes the continuing closure of bank branches in Northern Ireland  and deplores the withdrawal of local banking services in communities across Northern Ireland.

Conference notes the importance of banking services delivered at a local level

Conference further notes with concern the emergence of banking hubs in Northern Ireland.

Conference agrees that banking hubs are not a direct replacement for traditional bank branches.

Conference further notes the results of polling undertaken by polling company Ireland thinks in partnership with Lucid Thinks which found that :

  • 77% of people feel local bank branch with face-to-face customer service to your local area is either very important or important.
  • 87%  support a commitment from Banks to maintain current bank branch levels for a period of five years.

Conference calls on ICTU NI to campaign with the FSU seeking the Minister for Finance to seek from the banks a moratorium on branch closures for a period of five years in Northern Ireland.
