Motion no: 42
Conference recognises that the deplorable practice of active large-scale poaching of each other’s members by trade unions is detrimental to members interests. These practices reduce the capacity of members to fight for better pay and terms and conditions of employment, disrupts workplace trade union organisation and ultimately can cost members their jobs. The use of such methods indicates a poverty of ambition on the part of the trade union movement and a reluctance to face the challenge of organising the unorganised. In the long term such methods will have an extremely detrimental impact on the ability of the trade union movement to work under one umbrella organisation.
Conference, therefore, calls on Northern Committee of ICTU to take urgent steps to address this issue and to facilitate discussion between trade unions to reach agreement on spheres of influence and demarcation.
