Motion no: 24
Conference recognises the importance of meeting the Paris Agreement Net Zero targets and notes that both our public and private sectors have not taken sufficient action to meet these targets.
Conference also notes the impact of climate on our natural environment with the ongoing pollution of our rivers and streams, especially the impact of pollution in Lough Neagh, our primary source of drinking water. Conference calls for affiliates to support the work of and affiliate to climate action groups such as Save Lough Neagh and The Rivers Trust.
Conference also welcomes the work in establishing a Just Transition Commission and Climate Commissioner but remains concerned that the delay in taking these actions makes changing the impact of climate change ever more difficult.
Conference calls on Congress to increase its engagement with DAERA and The Executive Office on these issues to ensure worker representation and to engage all Stormont Ministers prioritise work on a Just Transition within their areas of responsibility.
Conference also calls on NI Committee to establish a formal Climate Committee that will bring trade union climate activists together to drive forward work on Just Transition and increase awareness and activism on this issue.
