Speaking during the 16 Days of Action against gender based violence campaign, ICTU Equality Officer Clare Moore said
The UK Government has finally agreed to ratify ILO Convention 190 which calls for the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.
This is especially important as it sets out measures which should be taken by Governments, employers and social partners to ensure that workers, and especially women, are free from violence and harassment, including domestic violence, in the workplace.
This important international treaty will also apply to Northern Ireland.
ICTU is calling on the Northern Ireland Executive to consider what additional measures must be taken to ensure full compliance with the treaty.
This should include proactive duties on employers to prevent sexual harassment at work as well as a comprehensive training programme for all Managers and HR staff.
The timing is particularly appropriate as the NI Executive prepares to launch the long awaited Eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls strategy.
