Conference notes the general shift in trade unions towards organising, meaning both the strengthening of our existing structures and also the recruitment of new members in traditional and new sectors.

Conference agrees that legislative changes are necessary in Northern Ireland to assist this shift and to neutralise both union avoidance and union busting tactics by employers designed to ignore, isolate and weaken trade unions.

Conference welcomes the Employment Bill consultation process now opened by the Minister for the Economy, Conor Murphy and his commitment to ‘good jobs’ recognising trade unions as a key element of good jobs.

FSU calls on conference to work with and support ICTU in its work on this new Employment Bill especially prioritising those elements of which will make it easier for workers to access and join trade unions, provide greater facilities and protections for shop stewards, disincentives on union busting and simplification of the collective bargaining and recognition process.
